Digital Mock-up

Magazine Title

The Title Of My Magazine: Bliss
I chose this because I think it is a short catchy title which is easy to remember and attarcts the audeince with the postive and recongisable word 'Bliss'
However I am just going to use this for my digital mock-ups because my model for my fnishing cover is indie looking threrefore this title may not suit the genre of my magazine and I wilol see how it looks agasint the image before finally deciding the title.

Double Page Spread

Language:
This text like the other double page spreads I have chosen, are all dominated by the image. This one is especially dominated by the image and takes up the whole of the background with very little text whereas on the other they just take up most or half of the page. This is to draw the audience in and make the page more visually appealing therefore are more likely to read the text and be hooked into what the item is about, they will then turn over and read the full article of text. Lady Gaga although is very popular and big in the mainstream and often in the chart music which means her genre of music is pop, she also goes against what is popular by being so individual and different, she does not follow fashion she makes her own, which shows how she is a trend setter and just makes her own fashion for her fans to follow rather than keeping up to date with what is popular in the fashion world. Lady Gaga is famous for her ‘weirdness’ and for being so different from everyone else and this is what increases her image and popularity because the more extreme she is the more known she becomes so the language of this item represents her weird and unique personality the famous controversial image which lacks clothing just adds to her fame.

Institution: Vanity Magazine

Values: This magazine will want to attract a large younger generation audience so will value what is popular and trending in the fashion and music world, will use people that they think will draw a majority of the audience in and something the audience will want to read about. Lady Gaga is very controversial however a lot of people are interest in her, some people do dislike her but almost everyone wants to know about her radical and interesting life making her a good person to include in Vanity Magazine and will be an artist they value.

Target Audience: Lady Gaga mainly appeals to the younger generation because she has a lot of popular music that goes into the charts which is mainly followed by the younger generation. She is also wild and usual which will appeal to youth rebellion and craziness. However, Lady Gaga is popular amongst a large majority of people and her controversial image attracts a large amount of male attention because she wears little clothing in most music videos. The particular double page spread is for aimed at girls as it is very pink and purple with bubbles which are stereo-typically aimed at girls.

Representation: The image of Lady Gaga stood on top of everyone as everyone looks like they have passed out or been defeated or something shows how important she is. The way she is stood is like how Jesus posed on the cross and she has big bracelets on her wrist that look like she was tied to the cross, she is also naked which all resembles Jesus this is a connotation of her importance and how she is ‘god-like.’ This image is another very controversial image which is often what lady gaga try’s to achieve with her unusual and outrageous image. She represents someone very unique and wild, breaks fashion and mainstream barrier’s to create her own type of fashion and just does her own thing.

Double page spread

Language: Long Shot- includes the whole outfit and takes up most of the page, left half of the page taken up by image and right taken by the text. Before we even begin to read the article we know that it is going to be about WILL.I.AM although it has a picture of the whole band, we can tell it is going to be an interview with him firstly because the rest of the band are faded out then secondly the text that matches the colours he is wearing, and then lastly because the text reads ‘will he won’t he?’ which all suggests the article is all about him, and we know this from the language of the text before we even begin to read the article. However we have a feeling the rest of the band are going to be mentioned because they are in the image and it I what he is famous for so it is most likely the main topic of the interview will include the band. Each band member is wearing clothes that you would not wear on a daily basis, makes them stand out and look appealing to the audience. However this standing out it different from on the other magazines because it is not a denotation of rebellion it just encourage individuality and being yourself and creating your own fashion which at the moment is fashionable so this does not rebellion against main-street fashion it encourages it, the black eyed peas music is popular so this also continues this concept. Allure magazine is up to date with fashion and popular music so we can see why they use popular and fashionable bands in their magazine.

Institution:
Allure Magazine

Values: To be up to date with the main-street fashion and music. They will value what is popular, who people will want to read about such as will.i.am.

Target Audience: The audience will be age range from 13-30 I think it will mainly appeal to teenagers and younger generation because usually that is the main audience that will be interested in pop music and keeping up with what is ‘in.’ However black-eyed peas could appeal to quite a wide range because they have been making music for a large period of time therefore people that already knew that in the past may still have an interest in them now even though they have changed over time to keep updated with what is popular and in fashion.
Representation: The black-eyed peas are a good representation of popular music, they can represent a large majority of people because they are breaking down racial and gender barriers as each band member has a different racial background and also includes both male and female members showing a good representation of equality in the band. The gold could represent the band being rich and important, the gold sick clothing is a good connation of wealth and success which is what they have achieved because as time has gone on the band has got bigger and more successful especially in recent years. They are a good representation of what is popular as they are always up to date with trends and what is new and popular they follow fashion and popular music and update with what is going on in the media and are therefore a good representation of a pop band.

Double Page Spread

Language: This matches the cover which I have posted below. They have kept the same text and colour scheme throughout both pieces which I will also do on mine in order to make my magazine seem professional. Lily is still supporting the ‘anti-image’ which goes against high-street fashion showing her rebellious streak. Her hair is messy and her outfit is quite tom-boy which suggests she doesn’t really care what people think of her which is a denotation that NME magazine do not care what people think of them and are glad to rebellion against typical high street fashion and popular music. This is also shown through the text which looks like it has been cut out and in different font sizes which looks like someone has just hand-made this and doesn’t really care about looking professional which continues this not caring denotation and rebellion.  On the double page we can see how the whole article is going to be about Lily even though her name is not mentioned in the main title. Long shot, so we can see more of the outfit than on the cover, large image takes up the whole of the right hand side of the page showing she is important,  we can also see the text is going to be related to her due to random bits of text been written in red which matches her t-shirt showing how the text is going to be about her. The large title and image make the page seem more visually appealing because it looks only a short amount to read and the quote from the text adds interest for the audience because it feels personal to Lily and if she is being ‘Honest’ then we will want to know what she is being honest about and find out the truth about Lily Allen especially if the audience are a fan of Lily Allen, which is likely due to they have bought the magazine with her on the cover.

Institution: NME Magazine

Values/Ideology of NME Magazine: They will value indie and rock genre of music, the ‘anti-image’ something or someone that is different and stands out amongst your typical celebrity’s. They will be up to date with festivals such as Leeds Festival, T in the park and Glastonbury which will be in their music genre. They will value youth and living in the moment.

Target Audience: For this particular article it will be Lily Allen fans or someone who is interested in what she has to talk about. People who have heard or like her style of music and are interested in this genre. However the whole image represents indie rock which will appeal to people who are interested in this music genre even if they have never heard of Lily Allen.

Representation:  This represents Lily Allen’s personality as well as the magazine in general. Lily Allen is not known for being girly or classy so it represents her personality and her rebellious side throughout the article due to the text, colour scheme and her image as a whole. However this artist will have also been picked by this magazine because NME magazine is not a typical pop or high-street fashion magazine, its genre of music mainly includes indie-rock and indie fashion which Lily represents well. The connation throughout the magazine is youth’s rebellion and this is shown in many different ways which make this magazine stand out and be different as if they do not care what other people think of them and are happy to be shown as different and less professional and less serious than other magazines which is why this relates to teenagers and youth because they are young and almost free living so they will be less serious and care less what people think about them.

Top of the pops analysis

Language- Medium close-up image of High School Musical star Zack Efron. Can see his happy, smiling face but also his body and outfit, which shows he is in good shape, tanned and good looking.
This is a good representation for this magazine, aimed at 8-16 year olds, Zack is famous for being in High School Musical and has a good clean image, typical ‘boy next door’ looks which is an ideal representation for a young teenagers magazine because it does not encourage youth rebellion and bad behaviour. On this image they have him smiling and he looks innocent which is connation of a positive, clean teenage image. Pink and yellow colour scheme, girly and innocent colours a good denotation of childhood naivety and innocence to encourage a hard-working, happy and sociable image to young teenagers to influence them in a positive way.
Typical chart music, pop means popular, popular high street fashionable image and music represented.

Institution- Top of the pops magazine

Values of top of the pops- As a pop magazine they will value trends and to be up to date with new music and fashion, to know what is popular and keep update with this. They would like to introduce a positive image for teenagers. TOTP’s will also value celebrities with a clean image, with no stories of drugs or any other scandals to produce a positive idol for young teenagers.
Topics relating to love and relationships to advice the audience on how to build and encourage good relationships.

Target Audience- young teenage girls – colour scheme pink and yellow very young and girly colours, good looking boy image: teenage heart throb will appeal to teenage girls who are a fan of high school music. Pop and chart music also appeals mainly to teenage girls who will want to be update with music and fashion and this genre of music. Also topics will appeal to teenage girls such as quizzes, and advice on ‘’33 ways to find a boyfriend’’ the kind of thing a young teenage girl would be interested in and want to know about. Also help and advice from Zack Efron including how he ‘beat his bullies’ which could help a young teenage who is getting bullied and will feel confident in this information if it is taken for a star they admire so a sly denotation to help teenagers and give them advice on things that they may be struggling with.
Representation- Zack Efron is a good representation for this magazine as a teenage heart-throb he has a good clean image, he does not appear to take drugs or alcohol or lead a wild and rebellious lifestyle so he has a positive influence on teenagers. This is the reputation that the magazine wants to uphold and encourage in order to represent a positive teenage image. Represents main-street fashion and music, the music that is most popular and your typical teenage image however not high-street fashion and music, just popular for this age group which shows how it represents youth as it is very child-like, you can see how it represents 8-16 year olds rather than older teenagers and young adults would be more interested in a classier and mature representation.

Vibe Front Cover

Language- Medium  close-up, always used for a magazine best because close enough to see models face as well as body and outfit which all adds to the denotation and connotation. Vibes genre is mainly R’n’B and rap which is also a rebellious kind of image. So the colour scheme is also red and black because this is a connation of death, anger, rebels, rock, rap and youth. However unlike NME the colour scheme differs on each cover but for this particular one is it red and black. You can tell from the text and the fact that it is Eminem on the cover that this music magazine genre is rap and |R’n’B style music. Eminem is a rap star but he is also a good representation of the rebellious image, he is frowning into the camera like he is really annoyed about something, his arms are covered in tattoos and are folded like he is squaring up to someone, refusing to move or do something which is a good connotation of youths rebellion.  This also is an anti-message going for a unique image which goes against the main-street fashion and music which would be more like the boy-band fashionable image.

Institution- Vibe Magazine
Values of Vibe- As a rap magazine they will value music that includes R’n’B and rap. As this is popular amongst a variety of races mainly including African-American people they will value anti-racism and equal rights for both groups. They could also value people involved in gang culture or from 8 mile or the ghetto for example the cover model, Eminem who has come from nothing has managed to make it as a big rap star so they will value encouragement for the younger generation living in a similar kind of situation to be inspired.
Audience- the audience would be people interested in this genre of music, likely to be age range from 13-30 mostly teenagers, and a larger majority of male fans. Young people from a similar background as the rap stars however this genre of music could relate back to a variety of people from different backgrounds.

Representation- Eminem’s represents rap, and RnB because this is the music that he is known for, it is also known that he is from 8 mile and therefore had a tough upbringing especially because he is white. He is wearing a plain black vest top so it is clear that this magazine is not trying to represent fashion again encouraging the anti-image. However this could also be because they want to show his muscles and tattoos. He is covered in tattoos which is a denotation of youth rebellion as some people do not like them and it kind of rebels against what people think of you showing you don’t really care as Eminem’s expression also suggests as he frowns directly into the camera with no fear.  This is a good representation of Vibe magazine who go against your typical main-street magazine and show they don’t really care what other people think and comes across as rebellious which will relate to the younger generation.  All the text is in sans serif which shows how bold and confident they are, they are not a fancy or classy magazine, they are just bold and the capitals, the font  and colour scheme shows this blatant, bold confidence.

NME Front Cover

Language- Medium close-up because close-up you wouldn’t get the figure in and the clothes but long shot would be too far way to notice the hair and make-up in detail. Punk rock image and a red and black colour scheme, red is a symbol for anger or danger and this is a good representation of a rock and rebellious image. The white and black outlined text then stands out against the image. The text is sans serif to continue this rock impression as if the words are been shouted and some letter are in capitals. Lily is a good model for this genre she is a connotation of youths rebilion. The denotation is show through the text, it is in upper and lower case, it looks hand-made and cut out as if someone has made it themseleves, this is the opposite of the mainstreet design which always trys to look really professional. This creates an anti-image which shows the denotation of rebelling against the mainstreet design by being different and unique. However normal magazine conventions applied such as teasing contents running across the bottom banner.

Institution- NME Magazine

Ideology- Values of NME include: Music, festivals, bands and artists. It’s a music magazine so they only include people and stories that are in some way related to music. The genre for this magazine is indie rock.

Audience-
People who are interested in music and festivals and the indie/punk/rock genre of music:  age ranges from around 14-30 mainly aimed at teenages to show

Representation-
Lily has a punk/rock kind of image, she is wearing red and black which is also the colour scheme of NME. Her makeup is pale with really dark eyes which is quite gothic. She’s looking right into the camera, making eyecontact with the audience, really cleer image. Looks confident and like she has attitude which represents NME’s indie rock genre. The denotation is also shown through Lily's outfit which is not something that would be worn on a mainstreet magazine or on one of the fashion and celebrity magazines, this also shows how they are rebelling agaisnt the mainstreet design by standing out and creating this anti-image to be different from everyone else.

Masthead Design

Big bold text, matches the genre of the magazine. Kept with the red, black and white colour scheme which I will also be using throughout my magazine. Sans Serif Text and should stand out agasint the background image expresses the bold, rebelious music genre which I am using for my magazine.

Magazine Front Cover Evaluation

My task was to create a College magazine for Wyke College. To start with I researched the conventions of a front cover of a magazine. I found that magazines had a masthead, an image, a date, a price, a colour scheme, date line and a barcode. So when doing mine I tried to use as many of these conventions as I could. To do so I planned my magazine front cover by creating a digital mock-up. In this I planned where I would place everything, I think this was essential because it meant my work was neat, tidy and professional.  For my main background image I took several photos of actual Wyke college students around the college site. I think this was effective because it was realistic to college lifestyle. I selected my favourite images and used them to make three different front cover drafts.  One of my drafts was unusable because it was landscape and not portrait; thankfully I wasn’t planning on using this image anyway because it was difficult to see the text against the background. I could not decide which draft to use out of my first and last one, so I selected a few Wyke College students and questioned their opinion. After receiving my feedback I found that my last draft was the favoured draft and decided to use this one for my magazine front cover.  This image is of a student smiling in the College library, in the background you can see other students working on the computer and socialising this is a good representation of college lifestyle and gives students the impression that college lifestyle is sociable and fun as well as hardworking. The student I used is smiling and has a friendly face which I think draws in the audience.

My audience would be Wyke college students because it is about Wyke and I would sell my magazine at the college. I was also planning on promoting my magazine around college by putting information on the Wyke College website and putting posters up around the college halls. I think this will help the students hear about the magazine and the features that are going to be included inside which will all relate to students and college lifestyle so should encourage them to buy the magazine.

Language:  Medium close-up, best suited for the front of a magazine, can see his casual but nice college clothes, but also the detail and happy expression on his face, the background is the library this shows a good representation of a student and students life style. He looks very natural, confident and happy.
Institution:  My media company would be Wyke because it is an in-house publication because it published in house by the college. This is because it is just relevant to the college so will only be sold and advertised at the college, the things that are featured in my magazine will relate to the things that are going on round Wyke college therefore would only need to be sold at Wyke, if you did not attend Wyke the magazine would not really interest you.

Ideology: The magazine cover is one of the students smiling in the college library. I think this is a good image to use because the library is really impressive at Wyke and we should be proud of it as a college, so by using it as my front cover it shows off our college. I also think as I stated above it is a good representation of college lifestyle it shows people working hard at the time as socialising and enjoying college. I think this sums up the college experience really well and over all gives a really good impression of Wyke and its environment filled with hard-working and happy students.

Audience: My audience is aimed at Wyke students because all the topics in the magazine are related to Wyke college students and will be advertised around Wyke College therefore would only be suited towards them. I would attract this audience by relating to things that would be going on in a student’s life, on my different drafts my cover stories included: the media New York trip, the Wyke party, the rugby match, the truth about drugs, how to prepare for exams and driving lessons. These topics would all appeal to students and would hopefully be filled with helpful advice.

Representation: I think my front cover does represent Wyke. Wyke students are all hard-working and dedicated however they are happy and sociable. In the library there is a mix of people working, chatting and as my main model I have him smiling at the camera to represent that he is happy at college. The background is also filled with computers and books which show all the resources and the impressive library has to offer. This was taken on a normal day at Wyke so is a good representation of the everyday life-style at Wyke.

When constructing this magazine I learnt that it is important to plan everything beforehand, I think the digital mock-up really helped when planning and kept my front cover neat and tidy. I also know that I need to think of a selection of different options and if I was to do my magazine again I would have taken more images so that I had a lot of different options to choose from. When constructing a magazine you need to always relate back to your target audience and what would be relevant to them and what they would be interested in, in order to sell your magazine. Overall I found that my magazine front cover was a successful representation of college lifestyle and gave Wyke a good impression, however if I was to do my magazine again I would try and be more organised and would have improved a few small details to make a more impressive magazine front cover.

How I will promote my magazine

I would advertise the magazine around college by talking to a few selected students, I will give one or two free copies out in order to spread the word, I will then arrange to have some posters displayed around the halls in order for the students to hear about where they can buy the magazine, what things will be featured in the magazine and also the price. I will also set up a webpage which will give half the stories in the magazine away, so the audience will want to purchase the magazine to read the end of the story. I will also put a quiz online but the answers will be in the magazine, the prize will be a free ticket to the Wyke Party which will also make the reader want to purchase the magazine in order to win the prize resulting in promotion of the magazine.

Digital Mock-up

Final Front Cover

Audience Feedback

Feedback on my three drafts:
Which Image do you think would be best suited for a College magazine front cover?

Philippa Branton: I like the first and last draft the most; I think they would both work really well. The first draft is a really clear picture however the background isn’t as good and not a very good representation of college lifestyle.  I think you should use the last draft with the image of the library as the background for your final cover.

Alicia Baldwin: The 2nd draft is a portrait image which means you cannot use this one for your front cover, and although I really like your first image I think the 3rd draft is the most attractive and will appeal to the audience more.  So I  think you should use the third one.

Megan Coggin:  I think the 1st draft is the clearest picture and looks the most professional so I think you should use that one for your front cover.

After speaking to some students from Wyke College I have decided to use my 3rd draft for my final magazine cover, I think this was the most effective and was best fitted to my ideology of everyday college lifestyle.

Draft 3

This was the last draft I made, I will now get some audience feedback from Wyke Colllege students, which is my target audience, so I could decide which would be best suited for my College magazine front cover.

Draft 2

This is my second draft however this one did not go as well as planned, because there was too much going on in the background it was difficult to see the text and didn't produce a very good over all outcome. I will still show it to my audience when getting feedback however I do not think I will be using this draft.

Draft One

This is my first draft, I may use this one as my final front cover, however I am going to try and make similar front covers with different images and then get some audience feedback to help choose my which one I will use for my final front cover.

Photos

This was a good image because it actualled showed a student working and looking at books like a student should be and was a good influence to other College students who will be reading the magazine, however I would rather have a picture with the person looking towards the camera and something slightly more eye-catching so I chose not to use this image.

Photos

This is a straight forward medium close-up image, therefore would be ideal for my front cover, however I prefer my first image because it fit my idea of a representation of my ideology college student better.

Photos

I liked this photo because I thought this was a good representation of College lifestyle, these students look happy and hard-working. However I could not use this image for my magazine front cover because we need a one person shot, medium close-up and it is not very eye-catching for thr front cover, so I will not be using this one.

Photos

This is one of my favourite images because I think this person is a good representation of a student as well as the backgound is the library so a good representation of College life and hard working pupils.
However this image would need cropping due to for the cover the best type of image is a medium close up and this image is not very close-up to the person.

Why I chose Wyke College

I have chosen Wyke College for my magazine because I think Wyke has a really good reputation, it is modern, popular and well known so will appeal to a wide range of my target audience which is students aged between 16-19. I have chosen this target audience because I think they will have the most interest in a College magazine and the kind of things that would be discussed in the magazine. I will have to make my magazine appeal to young people, I will do this by using bright colours, articles about famous people or issues that would appeal to a young person.

Analysis of a College Magazine

This magazine has a different look to the Vouge magazine this is because it has a different target audience and purpose. LIIAR anaylis:

Language: Medium close-up because it is best suited for a magazine front cover, close-up would not include the sporty student clothing and long shot would'nt be able to see the girls face in detail. Very natural unedited image, natural enviroment and casual clothing good representation of a student, happy to be a student, smart engaged fresh looking young person.

Institution: The College

Ideology: Values of this college magazine:  To represent a hard working, dedicated student. They will want thier students to be natural and confident at college and not feel to stressed. To encourage hard work, good behaviour and good grades.

Audience: Students, the College magazine would be handed out around the College to students to give them information about the College, it also gives them information and advice that could be useful to them such as on this magazine includes an interview with a 15 year old who is pregnant which some students may be able to relate to or maybe give students advice on safe sex etc. Also included is an article on drugs and the dangers which could also be useful to students and teach them the real dangers of drugs.

Representation: The girl is dressed in casual clothing and has a natural young, pretty face. She seems confident and happy to be a student. She looks fresh, healthy and not stressed which is a good way of representing the attitudes the College desire for thier students, the girl is a good representation of a student.

Magazine Analysis

Magazine Front Cover Analysis Lois England

LIIAR Analysis
Language- Medium close-up because close-up you wouldn’t get the figure in and the clothes but long shot would be too far way to notice the hair and make-up in detail. Mainly dark colours, dark red and black colour scheme, red is a symbol for love but because it is more of a maroon red it gives a more mysterious impression. The orange and white text then stands out against the image. The text is serif to give a more glamorous, feminine style. The woman is good representation of the magazine because she is young, pretty and confident but she also looks glamorous and wealthy an due to her hair and make-up and nice clothing.

Institution- Vouge Magazine

Ideology- Values of Vouge include:  Fashion, glamour, wealth, designers/designer clothes and models. Classy sophisticated magazine doesn’t include trashy stories about celebrities or gossip. Mostly includes items to do with fashion and clothing. Occasional interviews with people of high class.

Audience-
People who are interested in designer clothing, fashion and glamour- Mainly women, possibly more middle age women who can afford designer clothes, however I think a variety of different aged women read this magazine.

Representation-
The image is showing a young woman who is good looking and has all her hair and makeup done sowing wealth and glamour. The top she is wearing is revealing and her body language shows her confidence. The is a good representation of Vouge Magazine because this is the kind of classy and confident image they want to portray telling the reader that by reading this magazine they can look and be like this.

Magazine Front Cover Conventions

Left third - This is the left third of a magazine cover and it is importnant for sales in shops where the magazine is not shown by full frontage. The title must be noticeable in a display of competitors. The start of masthead is vital here and short coverlines are needed to be snappy and easy to read.

Masthead - The main title that has to be kept in the top left corner and dominate the overall text.

Images - Images are important for a front cover, it is important that that is the main center focus. offensive images should not be used and they should all be appropriate and you must have consent from the person that is modelling in the photo on the front cover.

Colour Scheme - You should keep your use of colour to a minimum, using the same colours throughout to show professionalism. By making the magazine too colourful, it makes it look tacky and over the top instead of neat and proffessional.

Splash - This a term for the front cover as a whole.

Vocabulary - This is just the text used in an article. It is really important that no offensive language or taboo is used throughout the magazine, this can be taken the wrong way and affect the sale of a magazine. It is good if you are able to use a wide range of vocabulary in an article.

Skyline - The line that is above the masthead, giving people information about the contents of the magazine.

Credit - Who the article was written by. A credit to the writer.

Bardcode - This is found on the back of the magazine and used to scan the price in shops.

Date Line - the date the magazine was out for sale in shops, this is also used so the public can keep up to date with the magazine.

The Brief

Preliminary excercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, cover featuring a photograph of a student in medium close up appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
